Police Wife & Mom Blog
Six years ago with a sleep deprived eye twitch, I rocked my 2nd baby to sleep for the third time that night alone. He looked up at me with his big, beautiful eyes. After singing him a song, I gently laid him down to sleep. Exhausted, a minute after I returned to bed, I cried as he began to cry for me again.
Veteran police wives told me that before I knew it, I wouldn’t be alone at night, my husband would promote, and he would be on a reliable schedule. I felt that day would never come. And then, before we knew it, (8 years into our marriage and 15 years into my police husband’s career), that day came. While we don’t know how long it will last, my husband got day shift and weekdays.
What those veteran police wives didn’t tell me was just how much I learned before that moment came…
I designed our lives so I was independent regardless of my husband’s shift or unexpected overtime. I asked for help from trusted professionals for daycare, groceries or cleaning if I needed it. Or robots- My robot vacuum seriously brings me joy when I run it before heading to bed. I built of tribe, or community, that I could lean on for everything from practical help to planning a play date for an anticipated solo weekend or holiday.
I left frustration and resentment behind.
I learned to appreciate my husband when he was home. We prioritized our time together. I learned to scope out safe places for me to take the kids alone for fun adventures and how to meet my children’s needs even if one had to wait…
And how my children already don’t remember those many evenings and nights alone with just me. But, there is something in them that know that, when Dad is home, it’s special.
I have been in your shoes, fellow police wife. I have been through the frustration, resentment, anxiety, and common struggles that so many of us police wives go through. I share this blog and many resources in hope that you find peace in this life faster than I did. I truly hope my free guide to joy as a police wife, my books for police wives and police kids, my police wife course, my 1:1 coaching and well as my blogs below help you.
