Try a new recipe together

On a typical day, I cook alone while my husband is usually working or helping to play with or care for our children. When my husband does cook, he is a BBQ man. We rarely spend time cooking together, so this can be a great way to reconnect. You may want to purchase a hard copy cookbook so that you can set aside cell phones or other electronics during this time. If you have not planned ahead, consider budget shopping in your pantry and fridge to use ingredients you already have around the house. My Favorite recipe book is the Adaptable Feast*, which features recipes that can be adapted for vegetarians, vegans, and carnivores.

Challenge Your Spouse to a Board Game

I have to admit that my husband and I have never sat to play chess together just the two of us even though I know he loves the game. I’m putting it on my to-do list now. We often play board games with our children but not with one another on game nights. Switch it up if this isn’t a normal activity for you two and try a board game. I love a simple game like Jenga. Also, a newer board game that everyone is raving about is Ticket to Ride.*

Make an E-Photo Album

Each year for our anniversary, I ask my husband what the happiest memory of the year was and the most challenging memory of the year. We acknowledge what we have overcome by looking back at the challenging moments, and of course love to celebrate the happy moments too. I have personally loved using Shutterfly to create e-photo albums, which you can request to have printed and sent to you for your memories.

Paint Each Other’s Portraits

My painting of my husband’s portrait would look like the painting below since I have no artistic talent, but I think this activity could result in a laugh, which we could all use more of these days. You can pick of $1 paint from a dollar store as well as canvases from Michaels if you cannot find that at the dollar store. I also found a 2-pack of canvases for $4 on Amazon. I also found a full acrylic paint set for $12 on Amazon*. My mom is an artist and says that acrylic paint is the easiest to work with.

Fireside Wine or Cider Tasting

Cozy up outdoors under the stars next to a fire pit under a blanket and taste different wines or ciders. Pair them with chocolate. You can get affordable wines and chocolates from Trader Joes. Ciders are seasonal, but I would try Trader Joes for those too! We are looking into sprucing up our patio and I have my eye on this Bonfire fire pit*.

Camping Indoors & S’Mores

Camp out in your living room with your spouse to switch up the scenery and get out of your normal routine. Even if you don’t have a firepit outside or a cabin in the woods, you can still enjoy S’Mores in various ways- you can us the oven, microwave, or even these S’Mores maker appliances*. I love oven roasted marshmallows, so I prefer the oven over the microwave.

Video Game Competition

Video games allow you both to let loose and forget about any other stressors together. Competition games, such as my all time favorite, Mario Kart*, might be best for date nights. You can make bets, such as whoever wins has to cook dinner the following night.

Plan a vacation.

My husband and I love to dream together about places we want to visit. Getting away and even thinking about getting away is helpful when your life is busy and stressful. You can research different areas that are driving distance and affordable, such as tiny house or cabin Airbnb rentals, or make a 5-year plan for an international trip.

Fall Photo Session

My husband and I rarely have photos of just the two of us anymore. If you are anything like us, then you probably don’t have many either. Get into matching or complimentary sweaters, take turns posing one another, and have fun with this activity. Your photos can be turned into your holiday photos or just fun to share with your loved ones through social media. If you don’t have an affordable tripod* for your phone, get one now. Mine is the best thing I’ve ever bought, because I take our family photos with my cell phone each year with it. Just use the timer feature so that you can set it up to take a photo and you can time to get into the picture. They come out great!

Candlelight Netflix & Chill.

I have to admit that netflix & chill is my husband and I go-to activity after our kids go to bed. But, switching up the scenery for this activity that is often the usual for you both can help to create a new vibe. I love lighting fall candles, turning off the lights, and watching a movie with my husband. Put phones away and truly enjoy each other’s company.

  • massages for one another

  • hot bubble bath like a jacuzzi spa

  • chill in white spa robes reading books

  • DIY facials with cucumbers covering your eyes
